Star Wine label for Malaga Wine
Label for wine bottle from Star Wine from Fredonia Products Company, Inc. in Fredonia, NY. Label is a rounded rectangle, with a gold border around a colorized line drawing of mountains in the distance, with houses and a green field in the middle ground. In the foreground, there is a camel carrying grapes being led by a person on a donkey, and to the right there are three figures packing and carrying large bunches of grapes. A gold star is superimposed over the image, and in front of that is red text "Star Wine" and below that is gold text in Hebrew "כשר לפסח" which translates to "Kosher for Passover." Text underneath in black "New York State Malaga Wine, Specially Sweetened. Alcohol 12% by volume."
Black text at the top of the label reads "Made and Bottled Where the Grapes Grow." the bottom left of the image has the logo for Fredonia Products Co. in black, white, and gold, next to bottling information. Black text on right bottom of image states: "Produced & Bottled by Fredonia Products Co. Inc., Dunkirk, NY." At the very bottom of the label is a strip of off-white with black text that is not available in translation at this time.
Founder of Fredonia Products Company among others, Meyer Star was born in Russian Poland in 1869 or 1870. He married in 1891 and the couple immediately left for the United States. While living in Bradford PA, Meyer painted houses and traveled and sold kosher food and wine to Jewish congregations as a visiting cantor. In 1916, he formed the Star Wine Co. and in 1917 leased a winery building in Fredonia. In 1920, Star bought a small winery at 200 Water Street to produce sacramental wine, which was permitted under the Volstead Act, (Prohibition). In 1926 they switched to making catsup. In 1933 they returned to wine-making, operating as Fredonia Products Co.
The Cliffstar Corp. was formed in 1971, adding a grocery division to pack fruit juices, catsup, etc. under private labels.
